A federal appeals court reinstated on Friday a proposed class-action lawsuit against Dell Inc, alleging that the company sold defective notebook computers. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco reversed a federal district court's dismissal of the case against Dell, which concerned computers bought between July 2004 and January 2005.

S.African Afrikaans rappers takes Internet by storm

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – A South African Afrikaans rap group has taken the Internet by storm with explicit in-your-face lyrics, provocative performances and using cyberspace to promote their music. A website set up by the group, Die Antwoord (The Answer), received millions of visits in the past four days, crashing the server it was hosted on after the group featured on blogs www.boingboing.net and www.dlisted.com

Facebook removes Microsoft banner ads from site

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Facebook is taking full control of display ads on the world's No. 1 social networking website, cutting short an exclusive deal that had allowed Microsoft Corp to manage part of that business. However, Microsoft — the exclusive provider of Web search on Facebook — will continue to sell text-based search ads on the website as the partners extended the arrangement beyond 2011, when it had been due to expire. A Facebook spokesman declined to say how long the deal has been extended.

No dressing down for banker in supermodel blunder

SYDNEY (Reuters) – An Australian banker who became an internet sensation after he was caught on live television viewing images of a scantily clad supermodel on his computer will keep his job, Macquarie Bank said on Friday. “He will remain an employee of Macquarie,” the bank said in a statement. “Macquarie and the employee apologise for any offence that may have been caused.”

Hollywood loses landmark copyright case in Australia

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Hollywood studios lost a landmark copyright court case against an Australia internet provider on Thursday, when a court ruled iiNet could not be held responsible for unauthorised downloads of movies using its service. The suit against iiNet was filed by a group of the biggest Hollywood studios including Village Roadshow, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox and Disney.

Mobile industry gears up for advertising

LONDON (Reuters) – Mobile phone operators in Britain have teamed up with digital market research firm comScore to measure mobile Internet usage in the first exercise of its kind, which they hope will jump start the mobile advertising market. Advertisers are keen to target consumers via mobile phones, which have the advantage of being both highly personal and location-aware, but have been held back by factors including a lack of hard data about mobile media consumption.

EU reviews Internet security after emissions fraud

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – An email “phishing” fraud against the European Union's greenhouse gas Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has prompted the executive European Commission to revise its Internet security guidelines, the Commission said. German officials said on Wednesday that online fraudsters had targeted international carbon markets to steal emissions permits from companies and sell them illegally.

Google, NSA to team up in cyberattack probe-Post

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Internet search firm Google is finalizing a deal that would let the U.S. National Security Agency help it investigate a corporate espionage attack that may have originated in China, the Washington Post reported on Thursday. The aim of the investigation is to better defend Google, the world's largest Internet search company, and its users from future attacks, the Post said, citing anonymous sources with knowledge of the arrangement.

Samsung plots smartphone catchup to treble sales

SEOUL (Reuters) – Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's No. 2 cellphone maker, aims to treble smartphone shipments and accelerate a strategy to boost software tools in a market dominated by Nokia phones, iPhone and Blackberry. South Korea's Samsung and its home rival LG Electronics Inc, which together corner more than 30 percent of the global cellphone market, face a major challenge to muscle into the fast-growing smartphone market.

Libya blocks YouTube, opposition sites – rights group

RABAT (Reuters) – Human Rights Watch accused Libya on Thursday of blocking access to YouTube and other independent or opposition websites, saying it signalled a return to the “dark days” of total media control in the north African country. It said YouTube was no longer available after footage of family members of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and of demonstrations in the eastern city of Benghazi were posted on the online video site.
