A Digital Portfolio – If you’re an artist, model or musician then you never know when opportunity might knock; when you might bump into an agent in the street, or meet someone with the right contacts with whom you can network. Even if you’re an entrepreneur you might find yourself wanting to give an impromptu presentation about your new business idea. And we all have hobbies and secret money making schemes that we’ll show to anyone given the first chance… And that’s how you become successful. Fortunately, owning a USB drive gives you the means to carry your ‘digital portfolio’ with you anywhere. As many of them are designed to be attached to a keyring you can carry them with you literally whenever you go out, and that means that when you bump into that music producer you’ll have all your sessions right there with you to show off.

Sharing Music – A USB drive acts as one of the best ways to share music, not only because of its practical size, but also because it’s tough enough not to get damaged (it’s highly embarrassing to lend someone an SD card only to learn it’s been lost or damaged) and versatile enough to be used on most machines without installation. Today the ‘mixed tape’ is sadly pretty much dead having died off with cassette tapes themselves, but a USB drive full of your favourite tunes for someone to browse through can be even more varied and expansive and give them a far larger taster of your music. Furthermore, if you carry it with you you can subject anyone to your music at the drop of a hat – with many people now using playlists on Windows Media Player in order to provide the music for parties a USB drive can help you hijack the acoustics and add your own personal flare to proceedings.

Borrowing Files – Any form of data storage is useful for transporting files to a friend or a business colleague, but they can also be just as handy for taking their files for your own use. This has many uses both for leisure and for business, for example if you’re round a friend’s house and decide you like some of their music you can ask to copy it over to your memory stick and enjoy it at home (though legally you will then have to either delete the music or download it if you enjoy it). Similarly you may want to get copies of photographs of the two of you, or a computer game they’ve been enjoying. If you attend a meeting or presentation on

the other hand for work, then a USB drive can be highly useful for making copies of crucial files and data which can help you work when you get back home/to the office.

Encrypting/Hiding Data – Not all files are necessarily ones that we want to share with the world. Whether it’s a digital diary entry, classified business entry, or just an embarrassing photo you don’t want on Facebook; leaving these files on your computer can be risky, particularly if there’s a chance other people know your password. In these cases then, a USB drive will allow you to delete the offending data and keep the only file somewhere where you can keep an eye on it – namely in your pocket. If necessary you can even encrypt the file or hide/lock up the stick somewhere no one will find it.
