I have noted that it is not by chance that some music tracks become more successful than others.

Why is this?

It is due to a term multi-hooks.

All good tracks support a multi-hook process.

If you take any component of a song, whether it be bass, drum, lead, string, or added percussion. If each one was highlighted separately, they would each sound good by themselves. Each one has been thought about, and that makes a good track. Try it out, find the bass, or all the percussion and play them by themselves. Each one could be placed into a separate track.

You can take each element, and just listen to it, and it sounds good. And that is a key. The musician is not betting just on the chorus to entrap your senses, but instead they ares hedging their bets. They want you to enjoy the full song, rather than you to fast forward to the chorus. It also encourages replayability- there are different multi-hooks that it does take a couple of listens to fully appreciate what was written.

How many times have we heard a Moby track, with a strange sound playing constantly within the drum set, and you think that is really cool. But then he incorporates piano work, and a good string section, or an acoustic guitar into the mix, all playing at the same time. Odds are one of the instruments you are going to like, or there will be one of the sections in there you will nod your head to. It is betting with multi-hooks that provides a great track.

A good track is meant for you to replay, for you to talk about it, and for you to listen to it years after it was made. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is a great example. I like the middle section, the choir, the one Wayne’s World made so famous. However, I know a friend who likes the part after, the heavy guitar section. Then on the other hand, there is another friend who likes the start, the piano section. Loads of multi-hooks and its sure to find an audience somewhere.

Anything can be multi-hook material. Effects, the drum beat, aspects of the drum beat, bass loops, sound effects…you need to add spice….you need to add multi-hooks.
